So my first week in Charlotte is almost at an end. Tomorrow is Friday, and I will leave Charlotte as soon as my day is done. I hope to reach home sometime around 8pm or so, dependent upon traffic. Other than the fact that I don’t have a laptop, so far my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. The people that I am working with are really nice and have been helping me get used to working again after being unemployed for so long. The work is interesting, and I am looking forward to getting stuck in. Almost all of my new colleagues have told me to enjoy the “honeymoon period” as once my laptop arrives, I will be slammed with work. As crazy as it may sound, I am actually looking forward to that! To have objectives and targets and to make a difference again – I can’t explain how good that feels!!!
So now that I’ve spoken about Charlotte, you may be wondering about Glenn Beck. I remember when he was on CNN, and wondered how they put him there as he seemed to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic basket. If you don’t know who he is, Glenn Beck is a conservative charlatan, someone who takes slices of the truth and makes a sandwich that suits his divisive agenda. I hate politics, and feel that there are good and bad people on both sides of the political fence, but there are some out there that just plain irritate me. Joining Beck in that club would be the original pill popping Telly Tubby Rush Limbaugh, stick insect hate monger Ann Coulter, and of course Dick “I am Darth Vader” Cheney, the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.
I can understand why one side doesn’t like the other. I can understand that they have fundamental differences, and that it is a base emotion to fear what we don’t understand. What I can’t understand is why people like this sprout their hatred in the name of truth.
For example, I caught a bit of the Glenn Beck show about 10 minutes ago, and was pleasantly surprised to see that he wasn’t crying (he does that quite often, but I guess that’s what a good actor can do – cry on demand). As expected, his diatribe was based upon the State of the Union address from last night. He spoke specifically about President Obama’s threat to sign an executive order to get a bipartisan committee started on the deficit. The Senate had blocked a bill that would have created that committee just the day before. So Beck starts talking about how Obama is saying that Congress is irrelevant and about how the people were irrelevant because Obama was using an Executive Order. Hmm, interesting, isn’t it. When Bush was President and the Republicans had the majority, I don’t remember any complaints then! Look at this, in his 8 years in office, President Bush signed 284 Executive Orders. Obama has signed 41 so far. It’s so funny (not ha ha funny) how these blowhards get so worked up about things that Democrats are doing when they were doing the exact same thing when they were in power. It’s just retarded, it really is.
The country is not out of the woods yet – we are still in the grips of a recession – rather than divisive politics let’s all work together to make this country great again. What’s wrong with that notion? My assumption would be that people like Glenn Beck only want to see an America that they envisage, an America that is devoid of any diversity, where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, and people like him with a hate filled rhetoric can run wild.
I’m off my soapbox now – so I’ll add a video for you. What can I pick?
The video is “Pork and Beans” by Weezer, and I really like the chorus:
I’mma do the things that I wanna do
I ain’t got a thing to prove to you
I’ll eat my candy with my pork and beans
Excuse my manners if I make a scene
I ain’t gonna wear the clothes that you like
I’m fine and dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and I’m tickled pink
I don’t give a hoot about what you think
Powerful lyrics, eh?
Peace!
I think Glenn Beck is certifiable. I only ever catch him when I’m channel surfing and he is always on a kind of maniacal rant. Really and truly, how did he get a job in broadcasting? It astounds me that he is given credence by anyone.
Glad your job is going well. I am really pleased for you!
Thanks Selma! As for how he got a job, and remains employed, the only logical answer (and one that worries me) is that he has an ever growing audience. If people didn’t listen to him, then his broadcast career wouldn’t last this long – which is sad. I guess when people are frustrated, they need an outlet, and he provides one. A totally biased and illogical one, but an outlet for some folks I guess!
Hi Manoj, thanks for visiting on behalf of Selma’s interview. I’ve never heard of Glenn Beck. It is commonly said in Australia about our politicians in defence of their wages, if we pay peanuts we’ll get monkeys. Well, there’s too many monkeys running around parliament house getting paid much more than they are worth. That money should be redirected to fix our roads, hospitals, transport and other services that are sorely lacking.
Thanks for visiting Rowe. Unfortunately the same logic applies here – the money (and perks) that Congress have sometimes make me feel that they have all lost touch with the common man and the battles that we face. They claim to be on our side, but I highly doubt that they would waste so much time pontificating if they were struggling to make ends meet.
“Dick “I am Darth Vader” Cheney, the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.”
THAT cracked me up!
Don’t you see the resemblance? Not just in the way that he looks at (and through) people, but via his insidious plans to replace the government with Haliburton with himself as the supreme commander or “emperor” ?
On as side note, I love watching Jon Stewart doing his Cheney impersonations, even if they sound more like Burgess Meredith as the Penguin from the old Batman TV series (“Pow”, “Smack”, etc).
